Good (and bad) day at the Spot!
I had my best day at the Spot since last winter. After warming up, I did a new 4-spot problem (I normally don't even bother to try these) on my second try! It wasn't that brutal, obviously, but has a high, scary, insecure top-out. Two other guys got the top and then backed down. I was climbing with John Christie and he makes everything look easy. Next I went over to my nemesis problem and sent it on my third try of the day! I was psyched. This is only a 3-spot, but very hard. I had worked on it at least two previous trips. Then I sent another 4-spot problem, but I'd done it before and it wasn't nearly as hard as the 3-spotter. Next up was a new 4-spot and I got it on my 5th or 6th try. It involved two very hard moves in a row at the start and then was pretty reasonable to finish.
Next I moved around to the biggest roof in the gym. I always struggle over here and I picked out a 3-spot problem with big reaches and very steep. There was a really hard reach after about five moves and after failing once, I just jumped on a move before this and failed on it 4 times before getting it. Once I got it, I was just barely able to finish it with another high scary top-out. Now, of course I had to do it from the start. It took me three move tries to link it and it was done. Cool! "Scottie's on fire!" (what movie?)
Jon Krackauer was there and I chatted with him briefly. He's climbing pretty strong. I tried a 4-spot problem and got up about 5 moves when I swung off. Just as my left leg came completely straight, I landed on it. Dang. I've dorked up my left knee just above my kneecap. No swelling, no pain just sitting here and just brief pain when it happened, but now I can't bend it through a small angle without a pain. I tried to jump a bit and got sharp pain. Going down stairs produced the same pain. Dang.
On the bright side, it might be enough to get me out of the BBMM and available to watch Derek's last soccer game. I'll have to see how it does tonight. This was a stupid, silly, tiny just fall from about 2 feet up, if that. I stopped after I hurt it to prevent any more impact on it.
